چکیده
background: the present study was undertaken to estimate and compare the levels of plasma total cholesterol (tc), low density lipoprotein (ldl), high density lipoprotein (hdl), very low density lipoprotein (vldl) and triglycerides in patients with oral precancerous lesions/conditions, oral cancer and normal subjects. materials and methods: the study comprised of 60 patients with oral precancerous lesions/ conditions, 60 patients with oral cancer and a control group of 60 healthy individuals. the diagnosis of oral precancerous lesions/conditions and oral cancer was confi rmed histopathologically. under aseptic condition 5 ml venous blood of overnight fasting patient was withdrawn from each individual. serum was separated by centrifugation and plasma levels of tc, ldl, hdl, vldl and triglycerides were estimated. descriptive statistical analysis has been carried out in the present study. analysis of variance has been used to fi nd the signifi cance of study parameters between three or more groups of patients, post-hoc test as tukey has been used to fi nd the pair wise signifi cance. signifi cance is assessed at 5% level of signifi cance. results: statistically signifi cant decrease in levels of plasma tc, ldl, hdl, vldl and triglycerides was observed in the precancerous and cancerous groups as compared to the control group. on comparison between precancerous and cancerous groups, signifi cant decrease was observed in cancerous group. conclusion: the change in lipid levels may have an early diagnostic or prognostic role in the oral premalignant lesions/conditions and oral cancer. the presence of decreased plasma lipid profi le should increase the suspicion of these lesions to be investigated further. key words: high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, oral cancer, oral leukoplakia, oral submucous fi brosis, total cholesterol, triglycerides, very low density lipoprotein

متن کاملAlterations in the Serum Lipid Profile in Patients with Oral Cancer, Oral Precancerous Lesions/Conditions associated with the Habit of Tobacco Consumption
The changes in lipid profile have long been associated with cancer because lipids play a key role in maintenance of cell integrity. Lipids are the major cell membrane components essential for various biological functions including cell growth and division of normal and malignant tissues. Lower blood lipids have been associated with the etiology of breast and colorectal cancer, and relation has ...
متن کاملSerum Lipid Profile In Patients With Oral Tobacco Habits and Oral Precancer Lesions and Conditions
Background & Objectives:. Tobacco carcinogens induce generation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species, which cause lipid peroxidation. Because of the lipid peroxidation, there is a greater utilization of lipids for new membrane biogenesis. Hence the present study was carried out to determine the variations, if any, in the serum lipid profile of subjects with tobacco habit and patients wi...
متن کاملOral cancer and precancerous lesions.
In the United States, cancers of the oral cavity and oropharynx represent approximately three percent of all malignancies in men and two percent of all malignancies in women. The American Cancer Society estimates that 28,900 new cases of oral cancer will be diagnosed in 2002, and nearly 7,400 people will die from this disease. Over 90 percent of these tumors are squamous cell carcinomas, which ...
متن کاملComparative Study of Serum Lipid Profile Parameters for Oral Cancer and Non Oral Cancer Patients
NTRODUCTION The origin of the word cancer is credited to the Greek Physician Hippocrates (460-370 B.C. (Before Christ). Hippocrates used the terms carcinomas and carcinoma to delineate non-ulcer forming and ulcerforming tumors. But, the Roman Physician Celsus (28-50 B.C.) translated the Greek term into cancer, the Latin word for crab. Oral Cancer (OC) is one of the foremost form of cancers, whi...
متن کاملCandida spp. in oral cancer and oral precancerous lesions.
To assess the presence of Candida spp. in lesions of the oral cavity in a sample of patients with precancer or cancer of the mouth and evaluate the limitations and advantages of microbiological and histological methods, 103 subjects with precancerous or cancerous lesions and not treated were observed between 2007 and 2009. The presence of Candida in the lesions was analyzed by microbiological a...
